The story is about a young worker starting a job in a heater factory who is injured when she tries to clear a jammed machine. It brings up issues around training, supervision, machinery guarding, workplace procedures and working under perceived pressure.
One of the significant issues in Short Cuts is the lack of supervision of workers – to the point where the co-worker, Babs, was able to get away with over-riding the machine guard on a regular basis. Another significant issue is the ongoing use of a machine that frequently jams yet is protected only by a guard that can be easily overridden.
